7 Myths About Singleness

Is singleness a purgatory from which we need saving? Or is singleness the ticket to freedom from being tied down in marriage?

In a world that is becoming hazier than ever about the meaning of singleness and marriage, it’s more important than ever to have clarity about what the gospel says about singleness.

But first, a quick update about the New City Discipleship Pathway.

Since we launched the Discipleship Pathway in the fall of 2025, we have provided training in sharing the gospel (Sep 2025, Sun School), how to pray (Sep-Dec 2025, Intermission Groups), how to think “gospely” about work (Jan-Apr 2026, Intermission Groups), exploring the person of Jesus (Feb-Mar 2026, Christianity Explored), and how to understand gospel doctrines (Mar 2026, ongoing, Sunday School).

This summer, we are delighted to offer a summer book study in Gospel Singleness. But wait!

Before you tune out, a study about singleness is not only for singles!

Both married and single people need to have a robust, Scripture-based, Christ-focused view of singleness. Why? Because married people have a lot to learn from single people, and singles from married people. Singles and married people need each other, to encourage one another, and to share the unique challenges and opportunities that exist in both spheres of life.

As Laura Copeland wrote, “Just as the temptation for singles is building their own personal kingdom and caring only about themselves, the temptation for married couples is building their own little family kingdom and missing out on contributing to the kingdom of God.” Married people and singles both have blind spots; we need each other to help us see ours, and to point each other to Christ.

We will be reading through a short book called 7 Myths About Singleness by Sam Allberry, and we will be guided ably by Meaghan Burke and Ian DeJong.

The sessions will take place on Wednesday evenings, starting May 13th. Registration will open soon, so stay tuned!

As Sam Allberry wrote, “If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency.” Whether you are single or married, join us in May for a gospel-rich exploration of singleness!
