Not Just English Language Learning
by Richard MacDonald
In the TELL program here at New City Church we have a desire to help none native English speakers to practice their daily conversations, in hopes to help them improve their skills and confidence in holding a conversation with English speakers. Our conversation cafe is a great way to connect with other English learners, as well as have the opportunity to ask native speakers to elaborate on difficult words and phrases. TELL is run by Ian DeJong, Ian hosts the conversation cafe every Saturday starting at 2pm right here at New City. And of course, because this is a conversation cafe, there are plenty of drinks and snacks to go around!
During our last meeting, we asked some of our English learners questions to know how they felt about our program. Here is what Peter had to say when asked, “Why have you been coming to TELL conversation cafes?”
“Because I want to improve my English, not just through social media, but in conversation. I also want to make some friends. People here are really welcoming. I also want to learn more about the Protestant church.”
Next, we asked Lily, “How would you describe what happens at conversation cafes.”
She said, “We speak and practice our English. Each week, we go through a handout and we discuss a different topic in English (ie. music, movies, birthdays). We learn about different cultures and countries, and we also learn Scripture. And there's refreshments!”
Lastly, we spoke with Edvin and asked, “What is your favourite part about TELL!
In response he told us, “I enjoy everything! Everybody here is calm and patient. I enjoy the comfort that the leaders bring. I not only learn English, I learn more about God and the Bible.”
As you can see the response to the Conversation Cafe has been great! It’s very encouraging to get such great feedback. The great part about the TELL program is that any one from any country or age can come and join us. Anyone who’s first language isn’t English, or even tried learning a new language will know the difficulties of trying to speak another language. So we strive to build up confidence and not judge those who are taking the steps to learn. We take our time to teach and listen to everyone working hard to speak.
So with that being said, if you’re interested in helping out and having conversions people from different cultures. This is a great opportunity, so please reach out to Ian DeJong for more information!
